1 Emerging concrete mixes are changing the concrete industry, 2006-04-17 13:28:33.0
In trying to get some of the new business in concrete construction, you would benefit from "new" emerging technologies, such as self-consolidating concrete and fly ash, suggests Dr. Richard S. Szecsy, vice president, new product development, Lattimore Materials Company, McKinney, TX. Such emerging technologies that are "being integrated into the concrete mix design process" are changing the industry, Szecsy told reporters attending a Construction Writers Association seminar prior to the World of Concrete in January.

With these new technologies, the industry is getting to something called "definable value," Szecsy says. "It means I can translate the use of specific concrete [mixes] into how I can make money for a contractor or producer," he says. "The kicker is if I can find an incentive for my customer to make money, I make money."

2 Residential demonstration compares building systems, 2006-04-17 13:29:30.0
You've got to hand it to the National Association of Home Builders' Concrete Home Building Council (CHBC) for thinking outside the convention. The trade association pulls off the most instructive educational events in the industry, and their latest achievement, "At Home with Concrete" demonstration at World of Concrete 2006, adds to their wired reputation.

The idea behind "At Home" was to stage a three-ring circus style event that pitted a tilt-up wall system with a precast wall system, three insulating concrete form systems, a post-tensioned foundation slab system and two removable/reusable above grade wall systems. As if that wasn't enough to make the event interesting, CHBC upped the ante by adding a post-tensioned reinforced masonry wall system in the mix. They upped the ante again by placing a strip of pervious concrete on the pavement for added measure. The bottom line was contractors learned first hand how these systems work and what the finished product they deliver looks like.
